New state law makes phony bands face the music.

HARRISBURG -- You may be a great pretender, but you aren't welcome in Pennsylvania anymore.

Gov. Ed Rendell yesterday signed a bill authorizing fines and injunctions to stop imposter bands from passing themselves off to concert-goers as the real deal.

It prevents groups from using trademarks they don't own, unless at least one band member was a member of the original recording group and is legally entitled to the name.

Tribute bands are allowed to perform if concert advertising does not mislead.

Otherwise, Attorney General Tom Corbett is authorized to stop performances and impose fines of $5,000 to $15,000.

The bill was sponsored by Sen. Robert Robbins, R-Mercer. It unanimously passed the House and Senate.

Critics of the measure said legislators shouldn't waste time passing laws that have little to do with Pennsylvania when there are more pressing issues on the table, like tax reform and gaming ethics.

The law could become a model for the rest of the country, said officials from the Vocal Music Group Hall of Fame in Mercer County  Pennsylvania

The Platters, The Drifters and The Coasters are the bands most frequently imitated.
