Limits on fake music groups heads to governor's desk.
This bill has passed both houses of the IL legislature largely through the efforts of Mary Wilson. Following is the AP story
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. State lawmakers are sending a strong message to copycat music groups -- stop, in the name of fraud.
The Senate voted without opposition today for a measure that would make it illegal for impostors to perform as original artists.
The House already easily approved the idea so it now needs only the governor's approval to become law.
A former member of the Motown group The Supremes came to Springfield earlier this year to ask lawmakers to ban knockoff groups.
Mary Wilson told a legislative committee that the fake groups have crossed the line to becoming quote -- almost like identity theft.
The bill's sponsor says this measure is modeled after laws in three other states and Wilson says the goal is to eventually make it a federal law. (The bill is HB4172. On the Net: http://www.ilga.gov )
